David Beckham’s exciting new football franchise in the USA has got everybody talking. ‘Inter Miami’ - to be based of course in the great state of Orlando - is set for a debut season in the MLS in 2020.
Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is reportedly in the frame to become manager of the club, but speculated transfers are being kept moderately under wraps.
The biggest rumour seems to revolve around arguably the greatest player of all-time, Lionel Messi, calling time on his Barcelona career to go across the pond in what would be an unbelievable coup for the club in its infancy. Antoine Griezmann is another player who could make the move if he decides to leave Atletico Madrid, having already stated that "If Beckham wants me in his club, then I'll go. I want to finish my career in the US."
Beckham had a remarkably eccentric career that took him to both continents, for the former England captain to collect a packed trophy cabinet. Whilst no silverware for the England national team was unfortunately not forthcoming, Becks procured league winner’s medals in England, Spain and France.
With his playing days spread across playing for Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and, of course, Manchester United (interspersed with his infamous move to the MLS with LA Galaxy, The Sportsman looks at some of the remnants of those great teams who could potentially join up with the legendary United Number 7 to kick-start his budding franchise.
Kaka
The name everyone wants. Though Kaka is currently studying under the tutelage of Gennaro Gattuso, Paulo Maldini, and Leonardo back at AC Milan, the 36-year-old still could compete with the best of them over in the States if he comes out of self-imposed retirement.
Danny Welbeck
The lad from Longsight began his career at Manchester United when he was eleven years old in 2001, around the time Beckham was probably the most famous sports personality in the world.
Now playing at Arsenal and unable to get ahead of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the Gunners first team, Welbeck is still only 27 years old and could take a look at compatriot Bradley Wright-Philipps’ example at the New York Red Bulls of how to revitalise a career.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Currently plying his trade at Beckham's former stomping crowd and now rival franchise LA Galaxy, he's stunning the West Coast with some goals that defy superlatives.
Marco Verratti
One of the hottest properties in the game today, Verratti has been long-linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes, with Beckham’s former club Manchester United one of the proposed destinations. Bringing the Italian to the Magic City would elevate Inter Miami’s prestige considerably.
Thomas Gravesen
He’s already reportedly living in Las Vegas. Surely the 42-year-old wouldn’t mind coming out of retirement to meet up with his old Los Blancos buddy over East from Nevada?
