Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague believes it is a matter of time before current Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui is sacked by Florentino Perez and believes a surprise appointment could be on the horizon.

On the Euro Leagues podcast, hosted by BBC Radio 5 Live, he analysed the situation at Real Madrid, saying:

"If you sat in the VIP area, as a friend of mine did just recently, you will hear the chairman of Real Madrid having a go at his own manager. His head is gone. He's going to go. When? It depends on the result of the Clasico. Remember when Rafael Benitez lost the Clasico, and I don't want to compare because he's not the same kind of manager.

"Benitez had the experience at the highest level and won things and the circumstances around his departure were different, but he lost the Clasico and he wasn't sacked straight away. But we knew he was a dead man walking, and it's the same with Julen Lopetegui.

"They are waiting to see who they will appoint. There's talk of Jose Mourinho. The admiration Perez has for Mourinho knows no bounds. He wants him back at the club."

This would certainly be a huge move for Jose Mourinho who is going through a tough spell at Old Trafford, with many fans wanting him out. Perez is a huge fan of Jose Mourinho and the Portuguese boss himself enjoyed the highest win percentage of his career (71.9%) at Los Blancos.

Mourinho won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana during his time at Madrid but left in unassuming circumstances after what he called “the worst season of my career.” His relationships with Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo were difficult during his time in the Spanish capital but with only Ramos now remaining at the club, a return could be welcomed by the players.
