There was no way Liverpool were going to let Arsenal and Tottenham dominate the headlines on a classic Super Sunday, after substitute Divock Origi managed to procure a sensational last gasp winner in front of the Kop at Anfield to steal all three points from Everton in the Merseyside Derby.
The action in the very dying seconds of the game lead to a result completely heartbreaking for Toffees fans, complete euphoria for Reds.
A half-hearted attempt at searching for a winner which the deadlock unable to be broken by either side going into the 94th minute of extra time, Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk far up the field produced a seemingly atrocious ball that looked quite innocuous at first.
His ‘Hail Mary’ looked to be coming to nothing even to the big Dutchman, with Van Dijk visibly turning his back and beginning the traipse back to his own half.
What happened next is simply stunning, with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford having an absolute nightmare. The spin Van Dijk had inadvertenly put on the ball was cruel, England’s Number One should have let the ball fly high out of play, but footage reveals him reaching high and tipping to ball back into play, onto the crossbar before landing right on Origi’s bonce so send Anfield wild.
Even Sir Kenny couldn't believe what he witnessed at the last moment. Still undefeated in the league!! #YNWA (@SameenAther)
There were 13 players in derby match today. Liverpool's first eleven, fans and crossbar (@dden_wizy)
Jordan Pickford is a Red, pass it on (@KopsVeryOwn)
Jordan Pickford has deffo got a red Christmas tree (@trigger39)
Let’s not take away the fact Virgil Van Dijk has just got assist of the season (@MassiveBrad)
Everton fans understandably were not at all happy, after seeing a solid performance ultimately unrewarded, a point slipping through their fingers in the cruelest, most bizarre way, on a day when Pickford’s counterpart Alisson produced a miraculous save to deny the Toffees an opener earlier in the match.
Lol Liverpool fans like OMG we're so f*cking amazing the truth is we walked all over you for like 60 mins just saying @JohnButlerEFC
One football fan even referenced the horrendous behaviour directed at former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius following his woeful Champions League Final performance:
Difference between Everton and Liverpool fans? We won't be sending death threats to Pickford and his family after a mistake. @JohnPulman
Pickford has had an exceptional year, becoming a household name through his heroics in Russia with England’s World Cup, it’s really a shame that it’s ending in a very different way, with the ridiculous Jurgen Klopp somewhat arrogantly charging way onto the pitch to celebrate furiously, beaming and gurning when he eventually made his way down the tunnel.
