Rochdale On Their Way To Wembley After Dramatic 2-2 Draw With Tottenham Hotspur

League One strugglers Rochdale held Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur to a dramatic 2-2 draw at Spotland, meaning Keith Hill’s men will now travel to Wembley for a prized FA Cup fifth-round replay.

Dale took a shock lead on the cusp of half-time after Ian Henderson finished off a fine passing move from the hosts. Spurs new boy Lucas Moura then grabbed the equaliser 15 minutes after the restart in his first start for the club since his January switch from PSG.

Spurs brought on the dynamic duo of Dele Alli and Harry Kane late on, and the introduction of the England pair looked to have won the visitors the game, as Alli won a penalty in the 88th minute, which was converted by Kane to put the top-flight side 2-1 up with two minutes left on the clock.

However, in scenes that will long live in the memories of Rochdale fans Steve Davies bagged a famous last-gasp equaliser to send his troops to Wembley.

Rochdale started the game with a real spring in their step. The League One basement club harassed their Premier League opponents relentlessly, and at one point could have gone ahead, only for Michel Vorm to deny Ian Henderson. The striker had another good opportunity towards the end of the half, but shanked his shot well wide when in a great position.

Tottenham, as you’d expect, had their fair share of chances in the opening 42 minutes. Son had a shot saved by keeper Josh Lillis, and Fernando Llorente wasted the rebound, while Moura’s electric pace caused Dale a number of problems.

However, Spurs were made to pay for their missed opportunities as Henderson, who had early come close on two occasions, fired the hosts into a shock lead on the stroke of half-time.

A precise pass from Andrew Cannon left the Spurs defence at sea, allowing the unmarked Henderson to coolly tuck the ball past Vorm, and in the process send the home support into dreamland, while their shell-shocked opponents bowed their heads in shame as they made their way to the changing rooms.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino fielded a completely different starting-11 to the side that came away from Juventus with an impressive 2-2 draw. Moura was handed his full Spurs debut, and it was the Brazilian who unlocked the Rochdale defence on the hour mark, firing past keeper Lillis after he was sent through by Sissoko to level the tie up at 1-1.

Victor Wanyama then missed a sitter at the back post, while the introduction of Ali and Kane gave Spurs the extra attacking spark they needed, with Kane putting the visitors infront from the spot after Ali was hacked down.

The goal came in the 88th minute, but Rochdale refused to give up, as substitute Davies smashed home an injury-time equaliser which sends Rochdale to Wembley for the first time since 2008.
