Roger Federer could not hold back his emotions as he attempted to give his post-match victory speech after the final of the Australian Open. The Swiss ace began to weep as he thanked his team and his supporters after what was a rollercoaster ride of a final.
Federer retained his Australian Open crown after beating Marin Cilic in fve sets. This was the sixth victory at the tournament and his twentieth Grand Slam title overall, four more than nearest rival Rafa Nadal. The 36-year-old shows no signs of slowing down this year and overcame his Croatian opponent 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to retain his title.
The five-set thriller ebbed and flowed as Federer won the first set in just 24 minutes. The world number six, CIlic, fought back well though and should be applauded for his part in this incredible final. The second set went to a tie-break which the Croat won in battling fashion to level the match. Federer came back once again to take the third set after an early break put him in control.
The fourth set seemed to be going in Federer's favour once again after another early break put him 3-1 up. However, Cilic wasnt going to give up that easily and remarkably fought back, breaking the champ twice to take the fifth set 6-3. That took us to a decider and Federer regrouped and showed his class and determination.
He broke twice and did not give Cilic a sniff as he took the final set 6-1 to secure his 20th Grand Slam.
He followed it up with this emotional speech, which you can see below.
