Rugby League Round-Up: Roby Joins 500 Club, Keighley Make It Two From Two

It was a thrilling weekend of action up and down the divisions

Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves continued their slump in the lower half of the Betfred Super League table over the weekend but James Roby was busy celebrating a major milestone as St Helens maintained their scintillating pace at the top. Here's our round-up of this weekend's action.

James Roby Joins Saints’ 500 Club

The magnificent Saints hooker maintains his status as a phenom in British Rugby League. He’s been playing for St Helens since 2004, having broken into the side during the era of the likes of Keiron Cunningham, Paul Wellens and Paul Sculthorpe. Since then he has done the seemingly impossible by becoming an able replacement for Cunningham in the hooker position, and few would have envisaged him dominating the game still 18 years on.

Saints recorded a comfortable 26-0 victory over a lacklustre Leeds side, with Roby receiving a fully-deserved standing ovation from the travelling supporters at Headingley upon reaching his 500th appearance for the Red Vee. He joins Billy Benyon, Kel Coslett and Eric Chisnall in Saints’ 500 club.

"I'm really proud to get to this point," Roby told Sky Sports. "As a young lad starting out, you never dream of playing so many games.

"I've been so fortunate throughout my career to play with so many great players and in so many great teams, be involved with great coaches and fantastic people in the backroom.

"I'm really thankful for it, and after the game what the lads did with me going over to the fans and clapping them, memories like that will stay with me forever."

Other milestones this weekend included Hull Kingston Rovers captain Shaun Kenny-Dowall reaching 350 career appearances as well as Wigan’s stand-off John Bateman hitting 250.

Saddleworth Winger Suffers Freak Injury

Charlie Mills of the Saddleworth Rangers suffered a nasty freak injury against Ince Rose Bridge ARLFC in the National Conference League.

Mills ended up needing a trip to the hospital after being impaled by the corner flag as he crossed the line for a try, with the flag’s spike ending up stuck in the back of his knee.

He seems to be on the mend already, which is great news, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

BBC Confirm Every Game Covered At 2021 World Cup

Tournament chief Jon Dutton has confirmed that more than half of the games at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup will be shown live on the BBC’s main television channels.

Other games that don’t find their way onto the traditional channels will be shown on the BBC iPlayer streaming platform. Every game of the delayed competition will be available to watch for UK viewers, with England kicking off the tournament against Samoa at St James’ Park, Newcastle on October 15th.

Keighley Defeat Dons Live On The Sportsman To Make It Two From Two

Keighley Cougars continued their impressive start to the season with a commanding 26-6 victory over Doncaster in a rematch of last season’s breathtaking Betfred League Two play-off final eliminator. Alix Stephenson, Charlie Graham, Lewis Young, Nathan Roebuck and Jake Webster all crossed the line at Cougar Park to give Rhys Lovegrove’s side a 20-point win over the Dons, who stay in sixth thanks to their win over Midlands Hurricanes on the opening day.

Sarginson & Greenwood Out For The Season

Salford Red Devils will be missing two key players for the remainder of the 2022 Betfred Super League season, with head coach Paul Rowley confirming long-term injuries for both after their 30-24 defeat to Wakefield Trinity on Sunday afternoon.

England centre Dan Sarginson is set to miss out not only on Super League success but also any chance of making England’s World Cup squad due to a shoulder injury. Second row James Greenwood will join Sarginson on the injury table with an ankle injury that will also see him out until 2023.

Back-rower Shane Wright will miss most of the season too, with the Aussie suffering a hamstring injury in the 26-12 win over Leeds at the AJ Bell in mid-March.

Things can’t get much worse in terms of injuries for Salford, with Kallum Watkins expected to be out of action until May.
