Rugby League World Cup Today: England Headline Wheelchair Semi-Final Day

The finalists of the indoor event will be decided on Sunday
07:00, 13 Nov 2022

After the men's final line-up was completed by Samoa on Saturday, it is the turn of the wheelchair athletes to play for places in the Rugby League World Cup final as France, Australia, England and Wales do battle in the event which has caught the imagination of the wider world over the past 10 days. But who will make it to Friday night's showpiece?

Here is everything you need to know ahead of Sunday’s action…

France v Australia - Wheelchair Semi-Final

Where: English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.

When: 12pm (GMT)

TV: BBC Two and BBC iPlayer

France’s RLWC so far: Group B winners (Beat Wales 154-6, Scotland 80-15 and USA 116-6)

Australia's RLWC so far: Group A runners-up (Lost to England 8-38, beat Ireland 76-18 and beat Spain 52-32)

If anybody looked at France's 80-15 win over Scotland in Group B and thought that their 154-6 opening win had been a one-off blow-out, the 116-6 victory over USA last time out will have set them straight. Les Bleus look as ready as ever to defend their crown, and the brilliant form of Gilles Clausells, Jeremy Bourson and Lionel Alazard has helped to ensure that they have reached the semi-final stage with plenty still in the bank.

Australia's defeat to England in the opening game was soon forgotten after they hammered Ireland, but the Wheelaroos will have to up their game by a fair few notches if they are to cause France serious problems. Bayley McKenna has been magnificent for the most part, and James Hill was excellent in their semi-final-clinching victory against Spain, but while their defensive record is decent the concern for coach Brett Clark will be over how much ability they have to breach France's try line enough to overhaul the free-scoring world champions.

Sportsman stat: France were so dominant in their first three matches that theirs was the only group in any of the three World Cup formats in which only one team finished with a positive points difference. Les Bleus' +323 dwarfed the returns of Wales (-96), USA (-107) and Scotland (-120).

England v Wales - Wheelchair Semi-Final

Where: English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.

When: 2:30pm (GMT)

TV: BBC Two and BBC iPlayer

England's RLWC so far: Group A winners (Beat Australia 38-8, Spain 104-12 and Ireland 121-0)

Wales' RLWC so far: Group B runners-up (Lost to France 6-154, beat USA 50-32 and beat Scotland 70-36)

After a testing opening fixture against Australia, England have tuned up perfectly for semi-finals football in their last two fixtures. They have made great use of their squad, seen points come from all angles, had multiple players kicking goals from all angles and even had Declan Roberts prepping for any tight moments to come with a late drop-goal in the 121-point thrashing of Ireland. In Joe Coyd, Jack Brown and Nathan Collins, they have try-scorers supreme, while James Simpson and Adam Rigby have been key players so far despite not being regular starters.

For Wales anything is a bonus from this point onwards. Their battering by France has now been long forgotten after beating an enterprising USA 50-32 in a great advert for the game and then keeping Scotland at arm's length to qualify for the semi-finals. Stuart Williams has been one of the stars of the tournament to this point, while Jodie Boyd-Ward faces one of her former nations in what is her third World Cup with a third different country after competing for Ireland in the 2013 edition and England in 2017.

Sportsman stat: England's wheelchair team have scored 37.6% of their country's points at this multi-format World Cup so far, despite accounting for only 27.2% of the nation's fixtures.
