Ryder Cup European Wildcards: Sergio Garcia's Odds Drift As Surprise Names Enter The Frame

The bookmakers have had their work cut out in pricing up the odds for Thomas Bjorn's potential wildcard picks for the European Ryder Cup team to take on USA later this month. The Dane has some difficult decisions to make before he announces his final four team members and we have analysed his potential captain's picks ahead of the announcement at 2pm on Wednesday 5 September...

Ian Poulter
Ryder Cup Form: Quite simply, a Ryder Cup legend. A veteran of five Ryder Cups and boasts a win-loss-halved record of 12-4-2.
2018 Form: Poulter missed the 2016 Ryder Cup but he has returned in style this season, winning the Houston Open and rising up to number 33 in the world rankings.
Wildcard Odds: 1/100

Henrik Stenson
Ryder Cup Form: Stenson has appeared at four previous Ryder Cups and his record is a decent 7-7-2.
2018 Form: Stenson started the year well, picking up six top-ten finishes, before a niggling elbow injury forced him to miss the Scottish Open. The Swede is yet to hit the heights as he continues to work his way back to form and fitness, but his experience is likely to be valued by Bjorn, particularly as five of the eight automatic European Ryder Cup qualifiers are rookies.
Wildcard Odds: 1/7

Paul Casey
Ryder Cup Form: Casey's record of 3-2-4 is from three appearances at Ryder Cups, although his last was in 2008 after Colin Montgomerie controversially overlooked him in 2010 despite being ranked in the world's top-ten at the time.
2018 Form: Paul Casey has returned to the European Tour this year in a bid to be considered for Ryder Cup inclusion, while he ended a nine-year wait for a win on the PGA Tour by landing the Valspar Championship title in March.
Wildcard Odds: 1/4

Sergio Garcia
Ryder Cup Form: The Spaniard has missed just one Ryder Cup since his debut appearance in 1999. His tally of 22.5 points from eight previous appearances for Europe ensures he is just 2.5 points short of Nick Faldo's European record of 25 points.
2018 Form: Sergio Garcia has one win and four top-tens to his name this year but dig a little deeper and you will see his form has tailed off. Seven missed cuts from his past twelve starts, although a tie for 8th at the Open de France, which was played at the Ryder Cup's Le Golf National venue, might play in his favour.
Wildcard Odds: Evens

Matt Wallace
Ryder Cup Form: Rookie.
2018 Form: Wallace has thrown his hat into the ring for selection with his third victory of 2018 at the Made In Denmark on Sunday. Bookies slashed his odds for a Ryder Cup place and he has been all-or-nothing this year, winning three times in 21 starts.
Wildcard Odds: Evens

Rafa Cabrera-Bello
Ryder Cup Form: The Spaniard impressed as a rookie in a losing cause for Europe in 2016, winning two and halving one of his three matches.
2018 Form: Cabrera-Bello has picked up six top-ten finishes whilst splitting his time between the PGA and European Tours, and he gave Bjorn a timely reminder of his abilities when tying for 7th in what was a loaded field at the Dell Technologies Championship last time out.
Wildcard Odds: 5/4

Thomas Pieters
Ryder Cup Form: Pieters was Europe's top points scorer on debut in 2016 as he won four and lost only one of his five matches.
2018 Form: The Belgian was the one bright spot to come out of Europe's defeat at Hazeltine two years ago, although he may have timed a return to form a little too late for a place in the team this time. Pieters endured a slow start to the year but hasn't missed a cut since May, picking up three top-tens in his last five starts alone.
Wildcard Odds: 9/4

Matthew Fitzpatrick (10/1), Russell Knox (20/1) and Eddie Pepperell (20/1) are longer shots for a wildcard pick.

You can see who Thomas Bjorn selects with his four captain's picks on Wednesday at 2pm (BST) - we'll be covering the announcement live on The Sportsman.
