Ryder Cup Memories: A Throwback To Team Europe Losing A Bet To An American Heckler

Ryder Cup Memories: A Throwback To Team Europe Losing A Bet To An American Heckler

The Ryder Cup is almost here! There is nothing like it in golf as Europe take on USA in a heated battle that gets the fans of both teams pumped up.

Along with the usual cries of "get in the hole" and "mashed potatoes" from spectators, there will always be a certain amount of heckling of the players - usually from the American fans - and one heckler enjoyed his moment in the sun in 2016.

The golfers normally ignore the 'bantz' from the crowd but not Henrik Stenson. The Swede heard a heckler showing off about his own short game while watching the European Ryder Cup team practice at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota two years ago.

The spectator, David Johnson, yelled that even he could have made a 12-footer after watching Rory  McIlroy and Andy Sullivan fail to nail their putts, so Stenson called Johnson out.

Stenson offered Johnson $100 if he could make the putt and Justin Rose duly laid a crisp one-hundred dollar bill next to the ball as the American fan prepared to take the putt.

He took his sweet time over it, saying "it's a bit of a short putter though, where's DJ's [Dustin Johnson's] putter?" He played up to the partisan home crowd in Minnesota before eventually resting over the putt and sinking it!

Cue delirium from Johnson and the crowd before he shared in congratulatory high-fives and hugs with the highly amused European team members.

The USA victory in that bet on the Thursday proved to be a sign of things to come for Europe over the weekend as USA went on to win 17-11 at Hazeltine in 2016. Will it be a similar story at Le Golf National in France in 2018?
