Sarina Wiegman Leaves Steph Houghton Out Of England's Euro 2022 Squad

The defender with 121 international caps has been left out of this summer's squad

Former England captain Steph Houghton will play no part in England’s Euro 2022 campaign having been left out of the squad by Sarina Wieman.

She only managed five Women's Super League appearances this season and has not played since January because of a recurrence of an Achilles injury. The manager, who won the last edition of the competition on home soil with the Netherlands, has chosen not take the risk on the 34-year-old, who has 121 England caps to her name and has appeared at five major tournaments.

Instead, centre-backs Alex Greenwood, Millie Bright, Jess Carter and Lotte Wubben-Moy have all been included after impressive seasons in the WSL and it seems form has come ahead of experience for Wiegman. Niamh Charles is the other name to miss out at the back, and Carter is likely to be asked to cover at full-back.

Sandy MacIver, Katie Zelem and Lucy Staniforth are the other notable absentees, but Fran Kirby has been included. She has been a key name for the Lionesses over the last few years, but has not played since February due to fatigue. With three warm-up games to come before the tournament begins, Kirby will have to prove her match sharpness if she is going to be a key member of this squad.

Chloe Kelly’s return from her ACL injury has been rewarded with a place in the squad and the 24-year-old will be one of nine players who are experiencing their first tournament. At the other end of the scale, Ellen White will go to her third Euros in a row, looking to win the Golden Boot and Jill Scott could play in her tenth consecutive tournament.

Nikita Parris has only scored one goal in the WSL this season but makes it into the squad, while Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp also boost the attacking options.

The Lionesses, who are hosting the tournament, are in Group A with Austria - their first opponents on 6 July - Norway and Northern Ireland.
