There’s competitive horse racing at every turn this Easter weekend with flat action up at Musselburgh and good prize money for jumps action at Haydock featured on ITV. I have one pick at each venue…
A wide open Scottish Sprint up at Musselburgh and I can’t resist an each-way play on course specialist Makanah.
Julie Camacho excels with her sprinters, with this fellow and horses like Judicial carrying the torch for the yard (they have also taken charge of former Royal Ascot winner and late Her Majesty’s horse Tactical who will win races in the north this year).
Makanah has course form figures of 1123421 and although he returns off a lofty mark on his first start for six months, he is well drawn in eleven towards the stands side. They will go at a good pace and if getting the right breaks, he should be troubling the judge.
The Jonjo O’Neill team had a couple of winners on this Haydock card last year, including in this race and target the good prize money on offer.
They have actually won this race three times in the last five years and could enhance that record courtesy of the lightly raced ITSO FURY.
An impressive hurdles debut success was followed up under a penalty at Ludlow in November and he wasn’t disgraced on handicap debut at Taunton three weeks later. Although well beaten at Ascot on a step up the three miles seven weeks ago, the winner went on to be sixth in the Albert Bartlett and he was just ahead of Ivaldi who won back at the Berkshire track last week in effortless fashion.
He runs off the same mark here and looks to have a golden chance to make it four in six years for the Jackdaws Castle outfit.
