Seismic Transfer Of Liverpool Linked Alisson And Real Madrid Bound Courtois Would Shake Up The Most Expensive Goalkeepers Of All Time List

The prized top-5 list of the world’s most expensive goalkeepers in history could be in store for a seismic shake-up in the next few weeks with the likes of Roma shot-stopper Alisson, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel all potentially in-line for blockbuster transfers, while Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid and England star Jordan Pickford could also be on the move.

According to reports from BBC Sport Liverpool have had an offer for Alisson accepted by Roma, which is believed to be in the region of £66.8m, double that of the previous record for a goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Courtois is set to leave Chelsea for Real Madrid, who could therefore make a move for Schmeichel, or even Pickford.

Only four goalkeepers have ever been sold for £20m or more, the most expensive of which is currently Ederson who Man City purchased for £34.7m from Benfica last summer. The Brazilian has since excelled between the Citizens sticks, winning both the Premier League and League Cup in his debut season after replacing Claudio Bravo, who cost £17m from Barcelona.

Ederson’s 2017 transfer fee broke the 16-year record of the legendary Gianluigi Buffon, who had previously held that honour since 2001 following his £32.6m switch from Parma to Juventus. The Italian went on to spend 17-years at the club, accumulating 656 appearances and lifting nine Serie A titles, before completing a free transfer to French giants PSG earlier this month.

Third on the list is Jordan Pickford who is the most expensive British goalkeeper ever after his £25m move from Sunderland to Everton. He’s since installed himself as England’s No.1, but his excellent performances in Russia mean a few clubs could be in for his services this summer.

Up next is Manuel Neuer. The German caught the eye of Bayern Munich back in 2011, who chucked £21m at Schalke for his services. It’s proved to be a fruitful move with the keeper winning six successive Bundesliga titles, a handful of domestic cups, the Champions League, while he lifted the World Cup trophy four years ago.

The most recent addition to the list is Arsenal’s new signing Bernd Leno who joined Unai Emery’s side a month ago from Bayer Leverkusen for £19.2m. It’s not yet known whether he will start ahead of the club’s current No.1 Petr Cech.
