There was an action-packed first day at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie, and it's American Kevin Kisner that tops the leaderboard on -5 after the first 18 holes, but there were a whole plethora of top-class shots hit during the day, and we pick out our top five shots of round one at the Scottish links course.
1. Sergio Garcia Hits Shot Out Of Water
We can all remember Jean van de Velde stood in the water at Carnoustie, well Sergio Garcia was the man in the drink in round one of the 2018 Open Championship, but the Spanish star was able to get a decent stance and get the ball out of the wet stuff.
Unsurprisingly, it was a bogey for Garcia, who found life difficult on Thursday evening, but it was the standout shot of the opening round, and the 2017 Masters champion will hope he can pull it back tomorrow, and make the cut for the weekend.
2. Kiradech Aphibarnrat – Chip In On Hole 17
It was a tough day for Kiradech Aphibarnrat as he carded a +3 round of 73, but the Thai player produced a fine shot in his opening round, as on hole 17 he chipped in from the fairway to grab an unlikely birdie.
After a bright start, Aphibarnrat picked up five bogeys on the back-nine before his fine chip in on his penultimate hole saw him end his round on a positive note. A beautiful strike bounced once on the green and straight into the hole.
3. Jon Rahm – Drive On To Green On Par-4 Third
Spanish sensation Jon Rahm is known as a big-hitter, and he showed his strength when he managed to drive the par-4 third hole to give himself a chance of an eagle.
Rahm had to wait for the group ahead to depart the green before he unleashed his monster drive over 350 yards to the green, and he made the most of his tee shot as he managed to two-putt and pick the birdie.
4. Zach Johnson Slots Bunker Shot For Eagle
Former Open champion Zach Johnson produced another fine round of golf in this British major, as the American ended the day on -2, only three shots behind first round leader Kevin Kisner.
But, Johnson’s shot of the round came on hole six as he produced a sparkling bunker shot to chip in for an eagle three to make waves early on his round. A tough middle saw Johnson slip down the leaderboard, but two birdies in his last five holes means he remains firmly in contention.
5. Tiger Produces Fine Birdie Putt On 11
Tiger Woods lit up Carnoustie at times on Thursday evening, but having picked up a disappointing bogey on hole 10, the American superstar nailed a wonderful 35ft putt on hole 11 to recapture a shot and move back to -2 at the time.
With a huge left to right break, Woods struck a sizzling putt across the green, and the crowd greeted the ball hitting the cup with a raucous round of applause, as the three-times winner clenched his fist in celebration. The former world number one would've been disappointed at how his round ended, as he failed to maintain his consistency
Tiger Woods holes a testing birdie putt to bounce back from his first bogey of the round to move to -2.
