Real Madrid have fallen to yet another league defeat as they threw away a 1-0 lead at home to Girona, leaving them trailing behind in the race for the La Liga title. Barcelona now hold a nine-point advantage over Real whilst Los Blancos also missed the chance to leapfrog their Madrid rival, Atletico, who now look to be the only side capable of preventing Barcelona defending their title.
Sergio Ramos was sent off late on after a second bookable offence and that saw the Spaniard break the record for the most red cards in La Liga history. Madrid’s captain has now been sent off in the league a remarkable 20 times, more than any other player in the competition’s history. Given Ramos’ famously aggressive playing style, many fans were surprised that he had not broken this record already.
Real Madrid did take the lead in the game thanks to a strong header from Casemiro and that was a lead that they held heading into the second half. However, Ramos received his first booking for a handball in the box which lead to a Girona penalty and the chance to equalise. Former Middlesbrough man Christian Stuani took the responsibility and slotted the visitors level.
Things went from bad to worse for Madrid when Girona took the lead thanks to Portu, after some questionable goalkeeping from Thibaut Courtois. The Madrid fans heaped the pressure on their own side after the goal begging for an equaliser. However, with Ramos up front in desperation, he was sent off for a dangerous high foot as he attempted an overhead kick.
There was nearly even more drama at the death as Courtois went up for a corner and headed the ball just wide of the target with the last touch of the game. As it was, Madrid fell to a damaging defeat which sees them out of the title race whilst Ramos’ red card pours more salt in their wounds.
