Gary Neville says Manchester United need to take time and reset themselves as a football club following the sacking of Jose Mourinho today.
Talking to Sky Sports News, Neville named Mauricio Pochettino as the man he wants to replace the Portugese but he said the sacking offered the club a great opportunity.
"Manchester United have been crawling along on their hands and knees for the past few weeks and months," said Neville.
"It has been unpleasant, it has been unsavoury. You could see on the pitch that it's been impacting the players who to be honest with you look completely demoralised. In some games they have looked disinterested, in some games they look inspired for 20 minute periods but they're so inconsistent."
Neville says the writing was on the wall for Mourinho months ago and the 3-1 defeat at Anfield on Sunday was the straw that broke the camel's back.
"The sacking of Jose Mourinho was a result of what happened last summer. When he came back for the first day of preseason training and started making complaints in the media you knew that this was going to rumble on. it played out all the way through the transfer window. A consequence of not backing your manager never ends well.
"There have been seven years of poor decisions, poor recruitment at the football club. The club needs to reset/ This is no just a moment to sack Jose Mourinho and appoint another manager, this is a moment for the club to take stock of what they're doing. Reset the club in terms of recruitment and decision making and make sure that what they do next is the right move. The next manager has to be the right manager and put the right structure as a manger.
"They see it as a positive as having 65 scouts - I see it as confusion."
