Shocking Serena Williams US Open Meltdown The Latest In A Long Line Of On Court Tantrums

Serena Williams is rightly acknowledged as one of the greatest tennis players of all time and a role model but she hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons overnight thanks to a remarkable defeat in the US Open.

The 36-year-old was in the process of getting soundly beaten by the brilliant Naomi Osaka in the final at Flushing Meadows when she exploded at chair umpire Carlos Ramos in a serious of remarkable outbursts.

Instead of talking about the birth a new star in Osaka, the world is digesting the latest on court meltdown from Serena Williams who took offence to being called for on court coaching.

A violation followed which set off a chain of events which lead to a smashed racket and the chair umpire being called "sexist" "a liar" and a "thief" with Williams docked an entire game late in the second set.

Osaka was left in tears as the crowd booed during the presentation ceremony as proceedings got out of hand in astonishing style, but this isn't the first time the multiple Grand Slam winner has caused major controversy, particularly at the US Open.

Patrick Mouratoglu, the long time coach of Williams, has admitted making coaching signals from the stands which is against the rules although the American's camp believe they have been singled out unfairly for a practice which is rife in the sport.

Claims that a man wouldn't have received the same punishment are not without foundation but even taking that into account this latest outburst from Serena was off the charts. Social media reacted in a typically divisive way with plenty on the side of one of the great athletes in the world fighting her own corner when she felt hard done by, but you have to doubt that this would have happened if legendary tennis player had been a set up, rather than a set down...

Serena Williams has form when it comes to meltdowns on court, especially at the final Grand Slam of the season...

The 2009 US Open was perhaps even more controversial than the most recent incident with Williams given a point penalty on match point down against Kim Clijsters

Having already been given a violation for an earlier indiscretion, the American was called for a foot fault at 15-30 down and that was enough for Williams to unleash a torrent of abuse on the line judge, which resulted in the point being deducted.

The alleged quotes from Williams to the line judge are incredibly shocking.

"I swear to God, I'm f------ going to take this f------ ball and shove it down your f------ throat, you hear that? I swear to God."

There is obviously something about New York which riles one of the greatest of all time and tempers once again reached boiling point in 2011 as Sam Stosur came out on top of her clash with Serena in the final.

That match had it's fair share of controversy as Williams was called for clearly shouting "come on" during a point and that led to length discussions between the player and the umpire.

"You're an unattractive person on the inside"

The sad part of this saga is that Naomi Osaka has been robbed of the biggest moment of her life thanks to events she had no control over. The Japanese player was far too good on the night and fully deserved her straight sets victory over one of the greatest of all time but the 2018 US Open Final will now be remembered for all the wrong reasons...
