Snooker Gets Ready To Remember Paul Hunter

The Paul Hunter Classic gets underway this weekend in Furth – and as always gives us an opportunity to remember one of the game’s most popular champions.

It’s been 10 years since this tournament – formerly the German Open pro-am – was renamed in honour of Hunter, who died of cancer just five days before his 28th birthday in October 2006.

To lose a 27-year old to such a cruel disease is always saddening, but the death of a talented snooker player and man who just loved his life as a professional sportsman touched everyone.

Paul was well on his way to becoming one of the sport’s all-time greats. He had already won The Masters three times and was lavishly showered with praise for the way he stylishly played the game.

With this in mind, it is fitting that he is remembered each and every year on the snooker calendar with an event that is always well attended by the sport’s top players and hosted in a nation with an almost unrivalled passion for the game.

The tournament keeps his name – and great character – in our memory and is rightful recognition for the contribution he made to the game.

He was more than just a model professional. He was a poster boy for the sport, one of the game’s iconic figures largely because he always played with a whopping great big smile on his face. His famous comebacks at Wembley will live long in the memory for their style as well as their execution.

So far this season, we’ve already seen two players pick up their first ever ranking event wins and given the relatively short format of this tournament, it gives players across the rankings a chance to land silverware yet again.

As this tournament is in place to honour Paul, it’s an equally nice touch that it offers an opportunity for someone to take snooker’s limelight and fulfil a dream. After all, that’s exactly how Paul made his name in our great sport.
