John Higgins and Mark Williams have been lighting up the Crucible for more than two decades and they just keep going.
On a night of gripping snooker at the World Championship, both of these multiple world champions booked their place in yet another semi-final and proved once more that class is most certainly permanent.
Higgins came out on top of a proper Crucible classic to beat Judd Trump 13-12.
The Wizard of Wishaw trailed 4-1, 7-3 and then 11-9 before pulling out some of the best snooker you are likely to see under pressure – including a clearance of 134 in frame 23 - to seal this big win. It books him a ninth visit to the one-table setup in Sheffield as he continues his quest for a fifth world title.
Trump is left to rue another near miss on the big stage, but for Higgins he put on another display to demonstrate his place among the sport’s pantheon of greats.
On the other side of the partition, Williams also turned on the style with some superb single-ball potting en route to wrapping up a 13-8 win over Ali Carter.
This victory takes him back to the last four of the World Championship for the first time in seven years and keeps him in the hunt to set a new record of 15 years for the longest gap between world title wins.
But there’s not just silverware at stake for the Welshman now if he can finish off the job. He’s promised to conduct his winner’s press conference naked if he adds a third world title to his tally in what could quickly become one of the most bizarre and humorous stories in Crucible history.
Higgins and Williams can of course meet in this year’s final in what would be an almighty clash between two of the game’s famous class of 1992 players. First though, Higgins must stop Kyren Wilson and Williams tame a Barry Hawkins in inspired form. But if the destiny of this year’s championship comes down to experience and know how, these two bring it in abundance to the table.
