The decision as to who will host the tournament eight years from now will be made at a FIFA Congress in 2024, where the 211 member associations will vote on which group is best.
The proposed bid from Spain, Portugal and Ukraine will be challenged by a joint-bid of Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. The four South American nations announced their campaign to bring the World Cup back to the continent in August of this year.

Morocco announced in 2018 that they would make a bid for the 2030 World Cup, having been unsuccessful in their attempts to hold the 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010 tournaments. They revealed a possible shared bid along with fellow African nations Tunisia and Algeria was a consideration.
Sky Sports have reported that Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Greece are expected to join forces for a bid of their own, with none of the three nations having ever held a World Cup before. Australia is a country that has had its name whispered to put their hat into the ring for the World Cup on a few occasions too.
After this winter's Qatar World Cup, the United States, Canada and Mexico will host the 2026 edition in a three-nation venture. It will also be the first World Cup in the 48-team format, 16 teams more than the current format.
Meanwhile, the 2024 European Championships will be held in Germany, with the 2028 tournament hosts still to be decided. The UK and Ireland have put forward a combined bid for that competition.
