Spanish Press Predict Summer Meltdown At Real Madrid And Return Of Jose Mourinho

The Spanish press got stuck into Real Madrid this morning after they tamely surrendered their European crown.

Jose Mourinho is being linked with a return to the Bernabeu and the feeling is that the club needs a major rebuild after they were embarrassed by Ajax.

The Dutch team were 2-1 down after the first leg yet were able to win 4-1 in Spain. The result has put the problems at the club into stark focus in a week where they were also beaten 3-0 by fierce rivals Barcelona. Real Madrid have failed to recover from the exits of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer and now Santiago Solari appears to be on borrowed time.

MARCA called Real as "a team that made history" but declared the "unrepeatable run was over."

Elsewhere, AS said that the result was the final straw in a "tragic week."

The Barcelona-friendly press took great delight in seeing future Barca player Frenkie de Jong give an outstanding performance for Ajax.

As for Santiago Solari, it now seems a question of when not if he will be shown the door. With a summer of rebuilding ahead, thoughts have inevitably turned to potential replacements and it's the same name that keeps being suggested as the next Real Madrid: Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese has been without a job since being sacked by Manchester United in December but in recent weeks he has hinted that he'd relish a return to Real Madrid.

There are few bigger jobs in world football and Mourinho clearly feels he has unfinished business at the Bernabeu.
