Jan Vertonghen’s being ruled out until the very least the last month of the year is certainly a major loss to Tottenham. The Belgian has not featured for Spurs since coming off against Huddersfield Town on the verge of half-time with a hamstring injury.
Whilst Davidson Sanchez can admirably deputise in the back-line, the reliability and compatibility of Vertonghen and compatriot Toby Alderweireld has been seen as an imperative factor in Spurs’ successes in certifying them as a top four contender in the Premier League.
No new signings were bought into the club this summer - with the onus seemingly strictly on the development and opening of their brand-spanking new stadium (tick tock) - and the concern is real that this lack of activity may have implications on a successful campaign.
Furthermore both Vertonghen and Alderweireld are both out of contract at the end of the season, with the latter batting eyelashes at Manchester United in the off-season.
News then that Tottenham are currently looking at bringing in not one, but two exciting young defenders must be welcome to Lilywhites supporters.
Bournemouth defender Nathan Aké is reportedly peaking the interest according the Sky Sports sources. With the Cherries making the Dutchman a permanent signing from Chelsea - after a successful spell on loan at the Vitality - for just £20million a season ago, Tottenham could now expect to pay close to the £40million Bournemouth have reportedly slapped on the 23-year-old. Spurs can, however, expect to have competition from certain Premier League rivals.
The other name on Tottenham’s wish-list may be a tad more unfamiliar. Sampdoria’s Danish centre-back Joachim Andersen - just a year younger than Aké - has been attracting a considerable amount of attention after a very impressive debut Serie A season after moving from FC Twente. After being gradually introduced throughout 2017/18, the imposing 6’4” Andersen has now featured in every single fixture of the new season to solidify himself in the Blucerchiati starting XI.
What’s more, as reported by Sport MediaSet, Andersen’s price-tag could amount to little more than half the amount Spurs would have to shell out for Aké, at around £22million.
Whether Pochettino closes the deal in the January transfer window or opts to present a whole new-look defence at the start of the 2018/19 season should become clear as the season progresses.
- Chelsea: 7/4
- Man United: 2/1
- Tottenham: 9/4
The buy back clause in Ake's contract would cost Chelsea about £40m!
Nathan Backé.
