Step Aside Alexis Sanchez, Manchester United Goalkeeper David De Gea Set To Become Highest Paid Player In Premier League

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is on the brink of becoming the highest paid player in the Premier League, surpassing teammate Alexis Sanchez’s earning of £350k a week. The Times report United are set to offer a deal worth £23 million of a year which, if the keeper agrees to the deal, would see him as the best-paid player, in terms of basic wage, in Premier League history.

This deal would be worth £365k a week which would surpass every Manchester City player and would take United’s wage bill to the next level. However, this could be seen as a cost-saving measure by the United board as they do not want to have to splash out on a replacement for De Gea, if he leaves at any point over the next 18 months.

Jan Oblak aside, there are no keepers on the same level as David De Gea in world football, meaning there is nobody who United could bring in who would improve their side. With the club set to splash the cash this summer in several departments, on players, new contracts and a potential new manager, this could be a real summer of change for United.

However, United fans are keen to make sure their goalkeeper is one thing that does not change heading into the new season and this new wage could tie him down and secure his long term future.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already heaped the praise on the number one, comparing him to some of the best keepers in United’s history. “He is the best keeper in the world. We’ve had some great goalkeepers and he’s challenging Edwin and Peter for the No 1 spot historically.”
