Steve Smith's Stunning Catch Sets Tone For Aussies On Day Two Of The Ashes 5th Test

Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja frustrated England on day two of the fifth test in Sydney. The Aussie captain took a sensational catch early in the day to dismiss Dawid Malan and set the tone for a dominant Australian display.

The tourists started the day on the back foot having lost the wickets of Root and Bairstow in the final seven deliveries on day one. Dawid Malan has been one of very few success stories for England during this tour had notched another half century but didn't hang around long on day two, edging a delivery to Mitchell Starc which Smith took in stunning fashion.

England managed to add 95 runs from their last four wickets to give the travelling Barmy Army some entertainment but were bowled out for 346, Moeen Ali, Tom Curran and Stuart Broad all scoring in the thirties.

Stuart Broad took the wicked of Cameron Bancroft for a duck as the Australians began their first innings but any hope of a collapse for England supporters were quashed as a half century from David Warner and Khawaja steadied the ship for the hosts.

Jimmy Anderson took the wicket of Warner for 56 but Steve Smith (44) and Khawaja (91) look well placed at the crease going into the third day, with the Aussies 193-2 at stumps, trailing England by 153 with eight wickets remaining.

England's first innings total looks below par and a good third day for the Aussies will see them well placed to wrap up the series 4-0.
