Stupidest Red Card Of All Time? Sheffield Wednesday Forward Fernando Forestieri Sent Off For Trying To High Five A Fan
Now we know referees make some awful mistakes in this day and age but this really is a spectacular one. In an intense Yorkshire derby between Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday, striker Fernando Forestieri was amazingly sent off for attempting to high-five a fan after a dramatic late equaliser.
When I say late equaliser, they don’t come much later than the 101st minute. The celebrations were wild as Wednesday made it 2-2 thanks to a Dominic Iorfa goal, when the game looked all but lost. Forestieri joined in with the celebrations as a fan made it onto the pitch, he was accosted by security.
The striker looked to see if the fan was okay, celebrating whilst looking to high-five him. He then walked back towards the centre-circle but before he could get there, remarkably, the referee brandished a second yellow card and sent him off!
Forestieri had opened the scoring in the first half before Rotherham sent the home fans wild with two goals of their own. The Millers looked like they were all set to scoop three points before Iorfa rescued a point for the visitors.
Those dropped points put Rotherham back into the bottom three of the table as they continue their fight against relegation. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are midtable, 15th. This was a day where Norwich went back to the top of the Championship table, as they took advantage of Leeds not playing to retake top spot. Sheffield United’s comprehensive win also meant Leeds dropped out of the top two for the first time in months.
