British Athletics have announced that there will be an exciting addition to the sporting calendar this summer as a brand new Athletics World Cup will be held at the London Stadium on 14th and 15th July.
Featuring eight nations, the very first World Cup event will involve all track and field events, up to and including the 1500 metres, with each team competing for a prize fund of £1.45m during the course of two evening sessions.
The floodlit event will involve top athletes from each of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, United States of America, Poland, China, Germany, France, Jamaica and South Africa, with one male and one female from each nation selected to compete for glory in each event.
Each country will name a team of approximately 45 athletes and they will name a female captain for the weekend.
The total prize money will be split between the nations, with the winner receiving £320,000 and the nation finishing eighth will receive £71,000. The prize money will be largely funded through ticket sales and organisers are hopeful that the World Cup will be involve sell-out attendances of 55,000 spectators on both days.
The introduction of the new competition comes at a time when London has enjoyed great success as a host city of athletics events, following on from the 2012 Olympics, as well as last summer's World Athletics and World Para Athletics Championships.
Furthermore, British Athletics are hoping to build on a busy weekend of sport as the Wimbledon women's final and FIFA World Cup third place play-off also take place on Saturday 14th July, while the Wimbledon men's final and FIFA World Cup final take centre stage on Sunday 15th July.
