The Best Volleyed Goals To Compete With John McGinn's Stunner For Aston Villa

The Best Volleyed Goals To Compete With John McGinn's Stunner For Aston Villa

John McGinn stunned this weekend with a goal that no amount of superlatives can do justice to.

Replay after replay, angle after angle, the Scot’s equaliser for Aston Villa 25 yards out rocked the claret of the Midlands.

The most impressive aspect is that the goal was not necessarily the fastest but the moments of it scoring sublimely through the air into a postage stamp position, gently glancing the under-side of the bar meant it has a re-watchability factor of plus eleven.

You’d be half-pressed to see a better goal scored in any division, in any league, in any country, this season.

Though the eventual result at Villa Park went the way of visitors Sheffield Wednesday, it is just one of those occasions where the direction of the three points won’t live half as long in the memory as the headline-stealing strike.

Simply, the most perfect goal you will ever see. The Sportsman has a ponder over some of the instant goals over the years that can compete with McGinn’s stunner is terms of precision, technique, and sensational sizzle.

There is one notable condition however, the goals must be first-time strikes, so Pajtim Kasam’s worldie for Fulham against Crystal Palace must unfortunately be left out of this particular list.

Hamit Altintop v Kazakhstan

As Borat has repeatedly informed us, Kazakhstan is the greatest country in the world and all other countries are run by little girls. Turkey’s Hamit Altintop made sure this statement was far from accurate with a magnificent volley against the Kazakh national team in the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Altintop’s goal would go on to win the FIFA Puskas Award for Goal of the Year of 2010.

Paulo Di Canio v Wimbledon

A goal that regularly tops Premier League greatest, there’s a reason that despite all of his controversies on-field and off, the Italian remains firmly in the hearts and minds of the Hammers faithful. The simply iconic strike against Wimbledon upon greeting Trevor Sinclair’s cross never tires.

Laurent Robert v Tottenham Hotspur

The architect of some of the most sublime goals we've been treated to in Premier League history, when the Frenchman scored you knew you had to tune into Match of the Day. Wonder goals also in the sense that you wondered how he scored so many beauties. We’re taking this stretching effort against Spurs in a 4-0 rout at the end of 2003. His other in the same match also defies explanation.

Wayne Rooney v Newcastle United

Back when the Englishman was wearing the number 8 on his back and at the start of his legendary Manchester United career that put him on the path to becoming the club’s all-time top goalscorer. Rooney was on the verge of being taken off - for Kleberson - but stepped up half an hour after Darren Ambrose had given the Toon a shock lead at Old Trafford with the most exquisite volley.

Tim Cahill v Netherlands

Taken with absolutely no hesitation by Cahill, the equaliser for Oz against Holland is so perfect you can hear the crack as the ball connects with the Australian legend’s foot.
