You arrive at the ground full of excitement. It's a big Champions League match against Bayern Munich and you've got your Chelsea kit on, your Dad looking on proudly.

It's getting closer to kick off and you're due to go into the home changing room and meet the Chelsea team, but a UEFA official comes along and tells you that you won't be able to be mascot because Bayern Munich don't have one.

This is exactly what happened one night in April 2005, as Chelsea took on Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final.

Step forward John Terry, who heard about the story and decided, as captain that there was no way he was going to deny this lad his dream night.

The lad in question was son of Andy Saunders, host of the @ChelseaPodcast, who took to Twitter upon learning that John Terry had hung up his boots to retire from the game and tell his side of the story.

Saunders, a massive Chelsea fan in his own right continued to tell the story via a series of tweets:

She told us there was a problem - she told us the UEFA representative (standing nearby) had said Chelsea couldn't have a mascot because Bayern hadn't brought one & my son wouldn't be allowed to go to the dressing room or walk out with the tea He was , as you can imagine, upset.

@mrasaunders.

After finding out why Andy's son wouldn't be allowed to be mascot, Terry said:

"we won't be able to get him in the dressing room but bring him to the tunnel as we walk out & I'll take him out with me -I don't care what he says . And I'll get him to be the mascot at another game so he can come & meet everyone"

Not always a popular figure with opposition fans, Terry has courted controversy on and off the pitch but nobody can deny his glittering career. However, when stories come out like this, it just shows that these footballers have a caring side too and provided Saunders and son with a wonderful memory.

The game? Chelsea won the leg 4-2 with goals from Joe Cole, two from Frank Lampard and one from Didier Drogba. It was Jose Mourinho's first season in charge at Chelsea and although they'd go on to beat Bayern Munich 6-5 on aggregate and win the Premier League that year, they would famously lose to Liverpool in the Champions League semi finals.
