The Incredible Stat That Reveals Why Watford Will Win The Premier League

The Incredible Stat That Reveals Why Watford Will Win The Premier League
20:02, 03 Sep 2018

Lightning never strike twice? Tell that to Watford fans who are basking in their best ever start to a Premier League season and sitting on a maximum 12 points from their first four games. Add to that this amazing stat comparing Leicester's season before they went on to lift the Premier League title three years ago, to Watford's effort in the top flight last year.

Javi Gracia seemed an uninspiring managerial choice when he was appointed last January, but he's weathered the storm of a difficult ending to last season and by Watford's standards a quiet transfer window, to come out of the blocks flying this year.

The Hornets were 2-0 winners against Brighton on the opening day, followed up with a 3-1 away win at Burnley, 2-0 win at Crystal Palace and the icing on the cake, a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road against Tottenham in front of Elton John, their first win against Spurs since 1987.

It's been a great start, a start that has seen Watford's odds tumble from 750/1 to 200/1, but it's last season's comparison with Leicester prior to their Premier League season that's really got the Hornet fans in a buzz.

Watford's finishing position last season was 14th, the same as Leicester's before Claudio Ranieri came in and won them the most unexpected title of all time. The two teams finished on the same number of points, 41. They had the same number of wins, 11 - can you see where we're going with this yet? And both teams had the same number of draws and losses, 8 and 19.

The parallel's are scary, could lightning really strike twice?

The odds would suggest that Javi Gracia's side are still a long way short of challenging for the title, although their 200/1 price is only four times bigger than Manchester United's and Spurs defeat at Vicarage Road saw them pushed out to 20/1 from 4's.

The international break gives the Hornet fans a couple of weeks to bask in glory and next up for Gracia's men are Manchester United, again at Vicarage Road on the 15th September (5.30pm).

Who knows if Elton John will again be in attendance, and whether Watford will still be standing come next May.
