If ever there's a place to enhance your reputation, it's most certainly the World Cup. A global event which provides a stage like no other to show off your talents, and yesterday it saw Hirving Lozano propel into the limelight with a winning goal for Mexico in their shock 1-0 win over Germany.
The 22-year-old was a constant menace on the left-hand side of Mexico's attacking line, but it was Mexico's will to attack a shaky German defence that showed the world that the world champions are there for the taking, and if you unsettle them they can be vanquished.
Leaving three up front at times when Germany attacked, the ideology of defend from the front has never been so prevalent, but it was the pace in which the Mexican's broke on the counter that showed that they could be a huge contender in the 2018 World Cup, and they will certainly not be a side people look forward to playing, and in Lozano we could be witnessing the birth of a future star of Mexican football.
Rafael Marquez came on to join an elite group of players to play at five World Cups, but as he waves farewell to the world's greatest tournament at the end of the event, in Lozano they have a new face of the side, and Lozano could follow in the footsteps of Colombia's James Rodriguez from the 2014 World Cup by going from a minor star to a heavyweight commodity.
A revelation for PSV Eindhoven last season, Lozano was already on the radar of Everton, who will be looking for a replacement forward should Wayne Rooney's move to DC United go through, but the Toffees are likely to have a whole host of competitors bidding for the signature of Lozano, as his pace, power and guile looks a real asset, and he could be targeted by some of the world's biggest clubs if he can build on that fine display on Sunday afternoon in Russia.
Everton may still be leading the race for Lozano as their new director of football Marcel Brands was the man to take Lozano to PSV a couple of years ago, and having switched from the Dutch club to Goodison Park, Brands maybe able to tempt Lozano with a move in the summer, but Lozano's stock is on the rise, and he could well be priced out of the Merseysiders price bracket, should he continue to blossom over the next few weeks.
