The Stinking Statistic That Proves Alvaro Morata Was The Worst Chelsea Signing Of All Time

Alvaro Morata looks likely to join Atletico Madrid in this transfer window, bringing to an end his disastrous spell at Stamford Bridge. Joining for £70m, big things were expected of the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward as Chelsea looked to strengthen their side and win the Premier League title yet again.

However, despite a decent start to life in the Premier League which included eight goals in his first eight games for the club. Fans were thrilled with their new signing as he took to the Premier League like a duck to water and they looked like having a decent season but then things took a turn for the worse.

The goals dried up and after several months and so did Chelsea’s fans patience. He scored just three goals in the New Year as Chelsea slumped to a fifth position finish and Man City ran away with the Premier League title. A red card for diving at home to Norwich in the FA Cup summed up his second half of the season and things didn’t improve when new boss Maurizio Sarri came in the summer.

But how does Morata compare with some of Chelsea’s other big money flops? Well, it doesn’t make good reading for the Spaniard. Having scored just 24 goals for the Blues and costing a whopping £60m, that works out at a huge £2.5m per goal, not including his large wages.

Comparatively, Andriy Shevchenko had a cost per goal of £1.4m whilst Fernando Torres, who cost £50m, had a cost per goal of £1.1m. By comparison, Michy Batshuayi, who has scored plenty of goals for other clubs has worked out at £1.7m per goal for the Blues, costing £33.2m when he joined back in 2016.

This stinky statistic puts Morata at the top of the list and clearly standout as Chelsea’s worst signing of the modern era. Painful reading for Chelsea fans and Roman Abramovich.
