The Three Names On Top Of Jose Mourinho's January Manchester United Wish List
He's one of three names reportedly wanted by Jose Mourinho as he seeks to kick-start the club's stuttering season. United are well adrift of the leading pack with derby rivals City looking on ominously good form and Liverpool and Chelsea also impressive.
The Star says United supremo Ed Woodward is ready to sanction some major spending after Christmas - and it could give Mourinho the opportunity to have another stab at bringing in Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin. United left their bid for the hugely impressive Godin too late in the summer as their desperate search for defensive reinforcements reached almost farcical levels.
United courted Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld for much of the summer without success and were knocked back by Leicester and England star Harry Maguire.
The third name on the wishlist is the highly impressive Lorenzo Pellegrini of Roma. If United could land all three, it would completely change the team's dynamic and may well see existing stars loaned out or sold.
It's Cahill who appears to be the most likely to move to the North West. He earned his first England call-up while at Bolton Wanderers and is familiar with the area - he also had a loan spell with Burnley early in his career. His face doesn't seem to fit with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri and given the Blues' strong start to the season, he is unlikely to force his way back into the reckoning.
