Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for Harry Kane even though he failed to get on the scoresheet in a 2-1 win at Newcastle United.
The old stat about Kane not scoring for Spurs in August is trotted out a lot but his effort against Newcastle could not be denied.
England's skipper and Golden Boot winner at this year's World Cup was defended by Pochettino who said: " For me, he's in his best form. I think score or not score I don't have doubts about this. He's in his best form. He worked a lot for the team. Be sure that he is going to score. But what happens with Harry is that he cannot score three goals in every game."
All three goals were scored in an incident-packed first half, and though the pace of the game slowed down considerably in the final stages, Pochettino was pleased with his side's efforts. He said: "It was a scrappy game. It was a game that from the beginning of the season is always difficult.
"Newcastle showed a lot of energy and had quality. It was a very difficult opponent for us. I think with all the circumstance it was a massive effort. I feel so proud, I think the three points were so important for us. If you put all the circumstances our players deserve massive, massive credit for the victory because it wasn't easy. They started to work Monday and try to prepare the team and start to work in the same way as the previous season."
Pochettino also added that Kieran Trippier, another of England's stand-out World Cup players, should be available again to start soon.
