After a deal reportedly being on the edge of completion for the last few weeks, Tottenham Hotspur have tied up their move for 21-year-old full-back Djed Spence, who makes the move from Middlesbrough in a package worth £20 million.
The England U21 international played a vital role in the promotion of Nottingham Forest, after joining the Tricky Trees on loan for the 2021/22 season in September last year. Steve Cooper was impressed with Spence’s work enough to chase a permanent deal this summer, but Spurs beat Forest to get the deal complete.

Under Antonio Conte Spurs Have Finally Learned How To Spend Their Money Well
Spence made 39 appearances in all competitions last season, with notable performances in the FA Cup as Forest defeated Leicester and Arsenal before getting knocked out of the competition by Liverpool in the quarter-finals. His fine work in the league was rewarded at the end of the season when he was named in the EFL and PFA Championship Team of the Season.
Most recently he received a call-up to England’s youth setup, being part of England U21’s European Championship qualifying matches and coming off the bench to make his debut against Albania during England’s 3-0 win.
In terms of the role he’ll play in Antonio Conte’s team, Djed Spence is a very progressive wing-back, often finding himself as an overlap for a wide forward. He linked up well with Brennan Johnson under the tutelage of Steve Cooper, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him grow in another partnership with the likes of Heung-min Son and Richarlison.
The deal is reported to be worth a total of £20 million, comprising of a £12.5 million fee up front and the rest in add-ons.
