Robbie Power is expecting Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Sizing John will start on ‘a good note’ as he makes his seasonal return in Punchestown’s John Durkan.
The seven-year-old established himself at the top of the chasing ranks last season, winning the Irish Gold Cup before taking the Cheltenham edition a month later.
He defeated Djakadam by a nose in a thrilling finish to complete the treble, and confidence is high as the pair refuel their rivalry at the same venue but over half-a-mile shorter.
"It will be a fantastic race with Djakadam and Sizing John, it will be a proper Grade One," said jockey Robbie Power.
"He has Grade One form over two miles, he was second to Douvan in an Arkle and he was second to Douvan over two miles last year as well, so two and a half will be an ideal trip for him anyway.
"I'd say the only thing is we are probably going to have heavy ground, but it is what it is and we'll have to rock on.
"He was ready at Haydock and he's a couple of weeks fitter than he would have been going to Haydock, so fingers crossed he's ready to start and he'll start on a good note."
Willie Mullins’ Djakadam is the National Hunt’s bridesmaid after numerous close efforts in various Gold Cups.
He finished second at Cheltenham to Coneygree (2015) and Don Cossack (2016) before finding Jessica Harrington’s star too good when only fourth in the Cotswolds.
He’s been placed in six Gold Cups, but has won this contest for the last two years.
Stablemate Shaneshill takes his chance, whilst Gigginstown are represented by pair A Toi Phil and Sub Lieutenant.
Former Punchestown Gold Cup hero Carlingford Lough completes the six-runner line-up.
TIP: This is a very intriguing race as Djakadam does so well in this race, but kept finding Sizing John too good. I think Sizing John gets the nod, just as he was primed for Haydock and has been so exceptional. Keep an eye out for Saturnas in the following race, he could be a smart novice this season.
