The fall-out from Rangers' remarkable 4-3 Europa League defeat to Spartak Moscow continued on Thursday night as angry fans took to Twitter to vent their fury about the performances of several players, with a former Liverpool star being singled out for particularly harsh criticism.
Jon Flanagan started the night in decent enough fashion as he set up Rangers' second goal of the night with a delightful ball over the top that Daniel Candeias finished with aplomb to put Rangers 2-1 up during a breathless first-half. However, it was downhill from there for Flanagan...
The right-back was again playing on the left-side of defence and he had a night to forget as he was continually caught out of position, lost possession on numerous occasions and the patience of Rangers fans is wearing very thin.
Flanagan has played in 17 games in all competitions for the Gers this season and he has been a regular fixture in the team for manager Steve Gerrard, who of course played with Flanagan during their time together at Liverpool.
Flanagan's own spell with Liverpool ended sourly as he struggled to force his way into the team following a knee injury and he was then convicted of assaulting his girlfriend earlier this year, before Gerrard offered him the chance to resurrect his career at Rangers by signing him in the summer.
It is fair to say that not all Rangers fans are enamoured with the signing...
Many fans of the Scottish Premier League side were left perplexed by Gerrard's refusal to make any changes, even when it was clear that the tide was starting to turn against his team.
Rangers managed to throw 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 leads away during the course of their 4-3 loss.
Flanagan left them exposed time and time again down the left. He was the obvious one to come off and Gerrard just wouldn’t make the sub. If we still defended like we did in the second half I’m not convinced we would have won. [@Lloyd_72]
In all fairness. Gerrard to blame for that tonight. Way to many changes. Flanagan should have gone at HT. linesman missed clear goal for rangers. [@Funybeatts1903]
He was all over the place, but they all were. Flanagan was the worst. Again. [@UJDavid1707]
There appears to be little in the way of sympathy for Flanagan, despite the fact he is playing out of position...
Absolutely threw it away. Flanagan should never play left back for us again. [@daviebyrne]
Phoning the police on Flanagan [@RangersAngus72]
genuine 1/10 performances from katic, goldson and flanagan, horrendous. [@andrewbenson92]
It would seem as if Gerrard has some tough decisions to makes selection-wise as he attempts to rally his troops for Sunday's SPL clash with Motherwell.
