Tyson Fury is will be back on our screens tonight as the 2018 Sports Personality of the Year award is handed out. Recent winners include Mo Farah, Andy Murray and Lewis Hamilton and many fans feel that this year Fury is deserving of the award having come back from the brink of suicide to fight again in Los Angeles.
Fury was robbed on the night as he took on WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in America and outboxed him over twelve rounds. However, the standout moment in the fight came when Fury was seemingly knocked out in the final round, in brutal fashion by Wilder after a clinical combination.
Fury was flat on his back and seemed to be running out of time before he rose to his feet in the final few seconds of the count and amazingly continued in the bout. He then fought back and landed a few impressive punches of his own before the final bell rang.
Most pundits and commentators had Fury ahead by a margin on the scorecards but amazingly one of the judges had scored the fight 115-111 in Wilder’s favour, meaning the fight ended in a split decision draw.
Fury’s comeback from his battle with mental health has been well-documented with him even admitting at one point that he was close to suicide after his victory over Wladimir Klitschko. Now he could be about to win an award that would cap off an unbelievable comeback although he is not the favourite heading into tonight, with Geraint Thomas expected to pick up the gong with the bookies.
