Tyson Fury has sat down with BT Sport and watched back the 12th and final round of his fight with Deontay Wilder, and as you’d expect, it’s made for brilliant viewing.
Fury spoke in detail about the final three minutes of the compelling contest, reviewing the dramatic moment Wilder thought that he’d knocked him out, only for the Brit to somehow recover and regain consciousness. The 30-year-old also marvelled at the different shots he landed, how he taunted the American, got a little greedy at times, then finally stated that he believed he had won the bout.
“I got a bit too greedy and tried knocking him out in the 12th round,” said Fury
“Should have just boxed on me toes round the ring, but I wanted to put on a show, and put the closing end on the American Dream. I tried knocking him out and hit him with a fantastic right hand before he dropped me. I almost had him after that as well.”
Fury reflected back on the moment Wilder knocked him down with two minutes 25 seconds left on the clock.
“There, bang bang!
“Wilder is celebrating like it’s over but The Gypsy King gets up - look how strong the legs are. He (the ref) said ‘move to the left, right, go that way’. I said ‘I’m fine,’ and I was.
“He (Wilder) came rushing forward again and in this round I hit him with the best right hand/left hook anyone has ever threw.
“I was taunting him, hands behind the back. He was as tired as I was but I do get him with a good right hand.
With just over a minute to go of the heavyweight title fight Fury revealed:
“Watch this now. The best right hand you’ve ever seen. Bam, bam. Two good shots, big right hand, big left hook, he’s holding on now boy.
“We both tried our hearts out. I can’t say anything bad about Deontay and I’m sure he won’t say anything bad about me. We’re both fighting men. We put on a good fight and entertained the crowd, that’s what we are paid to do.”
When observing his own reaction at the final bell, Fury said what everybody else was thinking at the time:
“How did I get up from a knockdown like that, to be as crazy as that! He knew he’d lost the fight. He didn’t do anything. I was running around, hands up. I knew I won the right.
“You can see the admiration and respect between two warriors. I’m not going to let the judges take away from what was a wonderful fight. It was as a good a heavyweight fight that I’ve seen in a long time.”
He’s not wrong there, bring on the rematch!
