UFC Utica: Nathaniel Wood Scores Stunning Debut Victory While Jarred Brooks Knocks Himself Out Slamming Jose Torres

England’s own Nathaniel Wood made an instant impact on his UFC bow, submitting vastly experienced Brazilian Johnny Eduardo with a D’Arce choke in the second round!

“The Prospect” had a wave of momentum behind him, after a run of five consecutive finishes saw him crowned the Cage Warriors bantamweight champion, defending it twice in the process. Flanked by mixed martial arts legend Brad Pickett, Wood has surrounded himself with the perfect team.

His opponent was a 40-fight veteran with a career spanning back to 1996, just a few years after Wood was born! Youth prevailed over experience in Utica, after a competitive first round saw both men trading back-and-forth on the feet.

The second round saw Wood control the fight on the mat, despite many lauding his striking pedigree. Wood saw an opening and took it emphatically, sinking in a D’Arce choke and submitting his Brazilian opponent midway through the second round.

If it couldn’t get any better for Wood, he was awarded a $50,000 performance of the night to show for his hard work! What a night for the Londoner!

It will be intriguing to see what’s next for Wood, as he likes to remain active and fight around three times a year. Another victory in 2018 would see him surge towards the rankings at 135lbs!

Marlon Moraes won big in the main event of UFC Utica, earning a brutal knockout victory over fellow bantamweight contender Jimmie Rivera.

The Brazilian managed to snap Rivera’s impressive twenty-fight win streak in just over thirty seconds, with a stunning head kick followed by strikes on the ground ending the fight in just seven strikes!

For Moraes, he moves to 3-1 in the octagon, with a sole loss coming to Raphael Assuncao by split decision last June. He will be looking towards a title bout or a fight with Dominick Cruz, with the title being contender in August at UFC 227 between Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw.

In the co-main event, Gregor Gillespie moved to an impressive 12-0 record, with a dominant display of wrestling and top control, topped off by a triangle choke submission. The New York man will be looking to move into the lightweight rankings with his UFC record standing at 5-0.

Ben Saunders bounced back from successive losses with a stunning knockout of Jake Ellenberger in the first round. Saunders landed a big knee to the midsection which completely folded Ellenberger in just under two minutes. The performance also earned Saunders the $50,000 bonus!

The most bizarre moment of the night came in the opening bout of the evening, with Jarred Brooks knocking himself out whilst attempting to slam Jose Torres!

The octagon moves on to Chicago next week for UFC 225, with Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero competing in a middleweight title match up, whilst Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington battle for the interim welterweight crown.

And… CM Punk takes on Mike Jackson!
