Stage 21 (Arroyomolinos - Madrid)
Flat Stage, Sprint Finish (117.6km)
The Stage
Congratulations! You made it through the Grand Tour season for another year and arguably completed the toughest race of the year. The reward is a largely processional stage through Madrid and a bunch kick.
The Route
A run through from Arroyomolinos – a suburb of the Spanish capital – through to a 5.6-kilometre circuit through the heart of Madrid that is taken nine times.
The Finish
Fast and flat in the city centre. Not even a roundabout in sight.
The Rider
A climber! No, joking. A sprinter.
The Contenders
Three weeks of racing can change things but the bunch sprints so far have been dominated by Mateo Trentin, who has three stages but not the Green Jersey. It might still be within his reach and Quick-Step will do all they can to get him a fourth win. Edward Theuns hasn’t been able to find the opportunities that his excellent form would have afforded him but he should be very close along with Jose Joaquin Rojas and Juan Jose Lobato, both of whom have finished behind Trentin as runners up on stages in this Vuelta.
Jens Debusschere and Sacha Modolo would also have good chances from a big kick.
