Welcome to the beginning of The Sportsman’s live coverage of Betfred League 1 in 2023, and we start off with a mouthwatering prospect as the first ever rugby league match at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium is played between Midlands Hurricanes and Cornwall.

Midlands are looking to back up a positive first season in Birmingham by kicking on in their new surroundings of the showpiece venue from the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Head coach Richard Squires and player-assistant coach Liam Welham will be hoping their troops can get off the mark quickly against a Cornwall team beginning their second campaign in the professional ranks.
Cornwall coach Mike Abbot has been running an eye over a number of potential new signings in the close-season, even giving a number of new rugby league converts a run in a recent practice game against London Skolars played behind closed doors in Bristol.
