Former Liverpool skipper now Rangers boss Steven Gerrard said Jose Mourinho was a "serial winner" on the day he was sacked by Manchester United.
Mourinho, a long-term admirer of Gerrard as a player, endured a difficult start to the season and his final match in charge proved to be the 3-1 defeat at Anfield on Sunday.
Speaking at his press conference today, Gerrard had sympathy for Mourinho though added, tongue in cheek, that Manchester United fans were unlikely to care too much about what he thought,
"He's a serial winner everywhere he has gone," commented Gerrard. "He's been sacked at United but he's won them a couple of trophies. He's done the best job since Alex Ferguson left.
"It seems like they sort of struggled but Jose came in and put a couple of trophies in the cabinet, so I don't think you can criticise him too much.
"It will be interesting to see which direction they go with the new manager, but none of the Man Utd fans care what I say about it!"
United are tipped to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season with many believing the chosen one will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, possibly with Mike Phelan returning as an assistant. Michael Carrick has been placed in charge for the next 48 hours but it is understood that Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is United's top target. Other names to be mentioned include former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and ex-Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.
