The journalist who broke the story about Manchester United sacking Jose Mourinho says he stands by his story despite the club denying the claims on Saturday morning.
David McDonnell of the Mirror reported that the Portugese manager would leave Old Trafford regardless of whether United beat Newcastle or not on Saturday evening.
He said he has confidence in his sources and remains convinced that United will be looking for a new boss before too long.
Interviewed by Robbie Savage on BT Sport today, McConnell said: "This will come as no surprise to anybody. This has not just happened in the last few days - it's been building for weeks, months.
"During the summer tour, Jose was calling out everyone it seemed - he was criticising the players, the board and let it known that he was unhappy. He didn't get all the transfer targets he identified in the summer - the only one he did get of any significance was Fred.
"The results haven't gone his way this season. He's had public fallouts with players and the board have lost confidence in him, all culminating in the story we ran last night."
When challenged about the story's validity, McDonnell stated: "Manchester United are not going to come out on the day of a game and say yes, Jose Mourinho doesn't have our backing. That's not the way it works. They are a public limited company and their share price would be affected. You have to remember that this is the club that denied Sir Alex Ferguson was retiring."
"I don't put any store by what Man Utd say."
@DiscoMirror broke the story that Jose Mourinho WILL be sacked and joined us on #SaturdaySav.
He's still not backing down despite the club disputing the story.
