Wins For Cris Cyborg And Khabib Nurmagomedov At UFC 219
08:28, 31 Dec 2017

The octagon made its final appearance of a busy 2017 in the fight capital of Las Vegas early on Sunday morning. The card dragged through the evening with eight of the ten bouts going to a decision, leaving a lot to be desired as we head into the new year!

What talking points can we take away from the T-Mobile Arena?

Holm showed heart, but Cyborg just too good!

Holly Holm started well, surprisingly controlling Cyborg in the clinch and managing to avoid the more dangerous strikes of the champion. The Brazilian continued to land a higher volume of strikes but began to show frustration at Holm’s impressive clinch work.

As the rounds went by, Cyborg’s talent began to show. She began to land more frequently, especially finding a home for her right hand which began to trouble Holm. By the end of the third round, the challenger’s left eye continued to swell after being rocked just before the buzzer.

Cyborg continued her dominance into the fourth and fifth rounds, picking Holm apart over the final ten minutes to cruise her way towards a unanimous decision victory. Cyborg called for Megan Anderson to challenge her next!

Who do you think can challenge Cyborg?

Dagestani Dominance!

A completely dominant display from Khabib Nurmagomedov extended his perfect record in mixed martial arts to an impressive 25-0. Khabib outstruck his opponent 160-26 over three rounds in the co-main event.

The Russian displayed relentless pace from the off to completely nullify Barboza’s diverse arsenal of strikes and continued at that level for the entire fifteen minutes. His Brazilian counterpart deserves a medal for withstanding such a beating!

Does anyone want to fight the Dagestani lightweight? Tony Ferguson and Conor McGregor represent the only clear opponents at 155-pounds for the twenty-nine-year-old. Will Conor return to fight him?

There’s one thing for sure… I wouldn’t be wanting the call to fight Khabib!

Could a change in fighter pay bring more finishes?

The lack of finishes was evident at the end-of-year event with eight of the ten bouts leading to a busy night for the judges in attendance.

Russian promotion ACB have added a $5k bonus to signed fighters who finish a bout inside the distance. The UFC currently operate mostly with a traditional show/win purse split, but could adding an additional finish bonus encourage more action?

It all comes down to money for the promotion. They have a business to run but incentives like those added by ACB have proven successful in delivering added entertainment, something that this card lacked!

The octagon will be locked away for two weeks before returning in St. Louis, Missouri, a week prior to UFC 220!
