Woops! Andy Murray And When Sports Stars Literally Let The Trophy Slip

When Andy Murray dropped a presentation plate at the Shenzhen Open he joined a long and illustrious list of sportsmen who've made been guilty of a handling error under pressure.

Murray posted a video on Instagram as he let a plate smash on the floor before furiously apologising to the officials. He added a caption to the clip which simply read: "Woops".

It got us thinking of about other occasions when silverware has not been treated with the repsect it deserved.

Premier League: Manchester City 2018

The sky blues were having such a good time parading with the Premier League trophy after their win against Huddersfield at the Etihad that it slipped out of the players' grip. The faces of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kyle Walker were a picture as they looked on like guilty schoolboys.

Stanley Cup: Various

The biggest prize in ice hockey has a history of being damaged dating back to 1962 when the Toronto Maple Leafs dropped the trophy in a bonfire and was badly damaged.

New York Rangers also had a bit of a mare with the Stanley Cup on a visit to an ale house. Customers took the opportunity to sup from the cup as it were, and it ended up dented and needing repairs.

Copa del Rey: Real Madrid

If you needed another reason to dislike Sergio Ramos, let us remind you of when he dropped the Copa del Rey from the top deck of an open top bus in 2011. The coach then ploughed into the prize, leaving it looking like a crushed beans tin.

FA Cup: Chelsea and Portsmouth:

After a few weeks of heavy celebrations, Chelsea handed back the FA Cup to the repair shop in 2012 and it took more than 80 hours of painstaking work to restore the famous old trophy to its former glory.

Four years earlier, Portsmouth's rough handling of the Cup saw it go in for repairs twice in a year.
