Day nine of the Fifa World Cup served up some cracking matches in Groups G and H while Brazil booked their place in the last 16. Looking back on the day’s action and looking ahead to Tuesday, here is your World Cup daily wrap.
Onana sent home from World Cup
Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana’s World Cup journey is at an end after he was suspended by the Cameroon Football Federation for disciplinary issues. It was reported that the goalkeeper fell out with manager Rigobert Song and asked not to be involved in their second group match against Serbia on Monday.
Cameroon fight back to rescue draw against Serbia
It was a six-goal thriller perfect to whet the appetite for the day’s action around the world. Cameroon worked hard to find a way back into the match after they went 3-1 down against Serbia. There was some good attacking play from both sides but seeing as they each leaked in three goals, it would suggest that neither look strong enough for the knockout stages.
Ghana hold off late South Korea onslaught
South Korea put up a fight but it wasn’t enough as they were beaten 3-2 by Ghana. They fought hard to equalise after being 2-0 down but they soon fell behind again as Mohammed Kudus’ second of the game wrapped up a key victory for the Black Stars. Son Heung-min has so far struggled to have his desired impact despite rushing back to action from an eye injury.
Brazil highlight the importance of squad depth
It wasn’t the prettiest of performances from Brazil, but they have secured their place in the last 16 thanks to a late 1-0 victory over Switzerland. Casemiro’s 83rd-minute strike was the difference between the two sides as Switzerland turned in an impressive defensive display. Tite’s substitutions were key to the victory with Rodrygo, Antony and Bruno Guimaraes all having a positive impact.
Portugal seal place in knockout stages
Similar to Brazil, Portugal didn’t play brilliantly but came away from their meeting with Uruguay with three points thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ brace. La Celeste’s lack of urgency in the first half played a key factor in their defeat and Portugal are now the third nation in the tournament to have booked their place in the knockout stages.
Henderson to come in for Bellingham against Wales
According to reports, there is going to be a huge shake-up in England’s midfield for their clash with Wales on Tuesday. Gareth Southgate is believed to be taking out Jude Bellingham with the experienced Jordan Henderson, a decision which hasn’t gone down too well with supporters who are already on the England boss’ back for the performance against USA.
