The Sportsman’s live and exclusive rugby league coverage continues this Sunday as the season’s big story so far, the York City Knights, host Leeds Rhinos in round three of the Betfred Women’s Super League.
The Knights stunned the rugby league world live on The Sportsman in round two as they beat reigning champions and recent Betfred Challenge Cup winners St Helens 13-6 at the LNER Stadium.
Tries from Grace Field and Tara Jane Stanley were enough to overturn an early 6-0 deficit and secure a landmark with for Lindsay Anfield’s side, and their squad has been further strengthened this week with the signing of former Castleford Tigers star Lacey Owen.
“Lacey has been out of the game for about six months whilst concentrating on her family and work. She has kept up her strength and fitness whilst away and has fitted into the squad really smoothly,” Anfield said of the Knights’ new addition.
“She is an all-round athlete with great footwork and aggression in defence. Lacey is also an outgoing and positive character in the group, and we are looking forward to seeing what she can offer in a Knights shirt.”
York’s next task will be every bit as tough as the Saints match, with Lois Forsell’s Leeds Rhinos side looking to build on a season-opening 60-4 win over Huddersfield Giants last time out.
The Rhinos were narrow runners-up to St Helens in the Challenge Cup final at Elland Road, leading early on before losing out 18-8 as the reigning champions retained their trophy.
But their bounce-back win over Huddersfield coupled with Saints’ setback against York will have come as a huge boost to Forsell and her side as they look to back up a 2021 campaign in which they finished top of the regular season table before losing out in the Grand Final.
Sunday’s clash kicks off at 12pm, with coverage begin live on The Sportsman and The Sportsman Rugby League YouTube channel at 11:45am.
