From Maupay To Maguire: A Look At The Best Premier League Debuts This Weekend

Maguire Hardly Put A Foot Wrong On His Man Utd Debut

The Premier League returned at the weekend and after another crazy transfer window slammed shut on Thursday evening, there were plenty of newly-acquired players on show hoping to get off to a strong start in front of their new, adoring fans.

Below we take a look at some of the summer arrivals that impressed us over the last few days:

Daniel James/Harry Maguire/Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Man Utd)

It was a dream debut for each of Man Utd’s new signings this weekend, with the club cruising past Chelsea with a 4-0 win on the opening day of the season.

Daniel James, who made the swap from Swansea City to Manchester United in a £15m deal earlier this summer, scored just seven minutes after coming on and introductions don’t get much better than being able to celebrate in front of the Stretford End on your debut.

Making his first start for the Red Devils alongside fellow debutants Aaron Wan-Bissaka, signed from Crystal Palace for £50m, and Harry Maguire, an £80m acquisition from Leicester City, all three of Man Utd’s new signings looked assured on their home debuts with Maguire picking up the club’s first Man of the Match award of the season.

Tanguy Ndombele (Tottenham Hotspur)

French international Tanguy Ndombele made a £55m switch to Spurs from Lyon this summer and marked his debut appearance in the English top-flight with a goal in the North London outfit’s 3-1 win over newly-promoted Aston Villa.

Despite signing off his maiden appearance with Spurs with a goal, manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to the press after the game, believes the Spurs faithful haven’t seen the best of the 22-year-old just yet:

"It was a fantastic performance, but to be honest there is a lot to improve, he only showed 30 or 40 per cent of his potential. He has amazing potential to improve.”

If that was only 30%, the Spurs faithful have a lot in store from Ndombele this season.

Neal Maupay (Brighton & Hove Albion)

New £20m signing Neal Maupay justified his lofty price-tag by helping to ensure that Graham Potter’s first game in charge of Brighton was a successful one, scoring the sides third goal in a 3-0 win over Watford.

Maupay was involved in 33 goals in 43 Championship appearances last season and already it looks like some of that form has begun to rub off in the Premier League.

Maupay is looking a particularly shrewd purchase for anyone who acquired him for their Fantasy Premier League side this year.

Rodri (Man City)

It was business as usual for Pep’s men as their Premier League season got underway in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

New signing Rodri arrived from Atletico Madrid in a club-record £63m deal and it didn’t take long for him to show City fans what it is about him that’s got Guardiola purring so excitedly.

His end of game stats showed that he won all of his aerial duels, completed all of his dribble attempts and finished the game with a pass success rate of 91%.

There’s still plenty more to come from 23-year-old midfielder this season but if his run-out at the London Stadium this week is anything to go by, the Cityzens have landed themselves a gem.
