Nick Watney is another one of the fine young American golfers who have been in and around the top 20 in the world rankings for some time now. Watney played college golf in Fresno before turning pro back in 2003 to the follow in the footsteps of his uncle Mike. His first pro victory came on the Canadian Tour the following year but he had to wait until 2007 before he made the big breakthrough on the PGA circuit.
Watney won the Zurich Classic of New Orelans in 2007 to announce himself on the scene and mark himself out as one to watch. The California native followed that success up with a win in the Buick Invitational in 2009 before he picked up his biggest win to date in March of 2011. Watney won the WGC Cadillac Championship by two strokes to see his ranking rise and earn himself a pace amongst the elite if the world game.
Since then we have seen Watney pick up another couple of wins on the tour, including the Barclays in 2012, to confirm himself as one to follow going forward. The Major Championships have proven a tougher nut to crack with Watney only managing two top ten finishes to date. He has played solid at Augusta over the past few years with a number of top 20 finishes but so far he has fallen short of the mark at the highest level.
Watney clearly has the game to win a Major Championship while he will also be aiming at making the American Ryder Cup team for the first time in 2014 and beyond. They are surely the two main aims for a player like Watney who is clearly a man going in the right direction.
