The World Cup fever is building as Gareth Southgate tries to whittle down his players into the final 23 that will travel to Russia. Four years ago, the country was gearing up for another tournament under an experienced manager and hopes were high that England could go deep into the tournament and do themselves proud.
As it turned out, England flopped. They lost their first two group games to Italy and Uruguay which dumped them out of the World Cup in Brazil, before scraping a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica. Remarkably that performance was not enough to cost the manager his job and he led them to a shocking performance at Euro 2016, when the Three Lions crashed out in the last 16 to Iceland in one of the worst results in England's history.
But back to the World Cup in Brazil and the squad that England sent out there. The country was hoping that the best squad could go out there and do the country proud but that is not how it panned out and judging by the squad, you can see why. Liverpool had just come off from their best ever season, throwing the Premier League title away in the last few games to Manchester City whilst Southampton had already had a good season.
The forwards on this list are not the most inspiring whilst the midfielders and defenders do not strike fear into the opposition squads. The World Cup rolls around again in June, let us hope that our squad looks a bit better than this one.
Good luck!
