The year kicked off in March for England with a 1-0 defeat to Germany in which Southgate fielded an experimental side.
A reasonably comfortable qualification period followed with England playing six qualifiers this year and winning all but one of them.
The 2-2 draw in Scotland was the only competitive game that England have failed to win this year, but they have lost in their two friendlies, the aforementioned game against Germany and a 3-2 defeat in France.
It will be an intriguing test for Southgate's men as an injury-hit squad look to beat at least one of the top teams in the world.
